Kick off the new year with a First Day Hike

12/29/2018 | Amanda Winters

Ring in New Year’s Day with an outdoor excursion with help from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.

On January 1, more than 35 hikes will be held throughout the state as part of First Day Hike. Hosted by the Maryland Park Service, First Day Hike encourages Marylanders to “start 2019 on the right foot” by breathing in the crisp, fresh air in one of our state’s many scenic parks. The event stretches across 32 different locations, including Deep Creek Lake, Calvert Cliffs, Assateague, Patapsco Valley, Sandy Point, and more.

With the variety of hikes offered, there’s something available for everyone. Find a group-guided hike along the beach or a family- and pet-friendly trek through a wildlife sanctuary. Take in the sights of cascading waterfalls and bring binoculars for bird watching opportunities. Pick up trash along the shoreline or simply get a good workout in the woods. Certain excursions will include hot cocoa, snacks, and campfires upon completion.

Hikes range from easy to difficult and every participant will receive a special “I Hiked” sticker for participating in the day’s event.
