In our first two blog posts in our Success in Maryland series, we highlighted two components of success that are incredibly helpful for business workforce and location. But Success in Maryland isn't solely about business, it's about quality of life, too. Today, we recap what several company representatives have told us about quality of life in Maryland.
Maryland Companies on Maryland's Quality of Life
Entertainment and recreation, along with diverse living options and great education and healthcare make Maryland a great place to call home. For Ben Edson, Founder & CEO of VariQ, Maryland's diversity in geography and climate seals the deal."One of the things that people will fall in love with when they move to this area is that it is geographically diverse," Edson said.
Heidi Wood, Administration Manager at Chutes International, reiterated that geography, as well as culture, contribute to Maryland's quality of life."We live in an amazing, diverse cultural area with museums, historical monuments and landmarks," Wood said. "We have everything from beaches to the mountains to cities and rural areas – whatever may be desired – within an easy drive."
In addition to the assets Edson and Wood mentioned, Maryland also offers a median household income that's higher than any other state in the U.S., and, as Wood said, "we live in a fairly recession-protected area."
Dorothee Heisenberg, CEO of Clear Guide Medical, said the quality of life is "wonderful." From the personal side, she is able to afford housing and schooling for her children. From the business perspective, her company can attract and retain top talent. "We were able to get those people who are coming out of PhD programs and who want to stay in this area," Heisenberg said.
Tenable Chairman Ron Gula reiterates quality of life's impact on employee retention. "The quality of life here in Maryland allows you to raise a family, and it also means you're going to have employees who are committed to you for the long haul," he said.
