The UM BioPark  is expanding in West Baltimore, with new laboratory space and state-of-the-art equipment to advance medical technology and the life sciences sector in Maryland.

This month, BD officially opened its new Innovation Center on the UM BioPark campus , which will give University of Maryland, Baltimore  (UMB) students access to the company’s advanced diagnostic tools and allow them to provide feedback on new concepts and technology. Known as one of the largest global medical technology companies, BD’s new facility contains several sophisticated systems, including the BD COR™ PX/GX fully automated diagnostic system for infectious disease molecular testing, and the BD MAX™ System, which includes a variety of tests and an open system for new test development.

BD’s Integrated Diagnostic Solutions global headquarters is located in Baltimore County, where more than 2,200 employees work on pathogen-identifying technologies, including those that test for cervical cancer, respiratory infections, and COVID-19. The company recently celebrated its 125th anniversary.

“The addition of the BD Innovation Center to the UM BioPark will not only support our thriving life sciences sector, but also help Maryland remain one of the most innovative states in the nation,” said Maryland Commerce Secretary Mike Gill. “This collaboration will ensure that our future workforce is prepared to tackle the technologies and challenges of tomorrow.”

“I’m particularly proud that BD is continuing its commitment to life sciences around the world by working with UMB to put our first university-housed research center right here at home in Baltimore,” said Brooke Story, worldwide president of Integrated Diagnostic Solutions for BD. “The BD Innovation Center offers access to cutting-edge science, including devices supported by robotics and AI.”

The opening follows other good news for the University—a recent announcement stated that construction will soon begin on a 250,000 square-foot building  in the BioPark. Known as the 4MLK , the two-phase development project will represent a $320 million total investment upon completion of both phases. 4MLK will connect the BioPark; UMB; and the University of Maryland Medical Center through the collaboration of researchers and life science professionals, and provide additional laboratory and office space for innovative companies and startups.

"The BioPark is a highly sought-after location for companies seeking commercial wet lab space as well as connection to UMB and the vast resources we offer,” said UMB President Bruce Jarrell, MD, FACS. “We are proud that 4MLK will deliver a high volume of new lab space to Baltimore, helping fill the severe shortage in our region."

A highly sought-after location is right—in the past year, several companies have joined the BioPark community, including JuneBrain ; NextStep Robotics ; and Vita Therapeutics . With in-demand lab space and opportunities for collaborations on the way, the UM BioPark is guaranteed to continue thriving and help keep Maryland on the forefront of innovation in the industry.
