Secretary Gill: Baltimore succeeds in tech talent report

07/28/2016 | Mike Gill

Commercial real estate giant CBRE recently reaffirmed something that those of us in the business community already know to be true – Baltimore has a ton of tech talent and we are continuing to attract more and more tech savvy professionals.

CBRE's annual Scoring Tech Talent report analyzes U.S. and Canadian markets on their ability to attract and cultivate tech talent. Baltimore rounds out the top 10 – an impressive ranking that shows we are headed in the right direction.

Baltimore also ranked #4 for top momentum markets, a list that details the highest tech talent growth rates between 2010 and 2015. Baltimore saw a 61.4 percent tech talent increase during the five-year span. Large influxes of college-educated workers are flocking to cities where the cost of living is low and tech jobs are abundant.

The ranking is really not surprising considering we have a critical mass of cybersecurity and information technology companies in our backyard. With nearly 140,000 industry workers across the state, our tech community is a force to be reckoned with. We rank #1 in academic research and development intensity and #1 in STEM job concentration.

While still a relatively small part of the economy, employers have added more than 1 million tech jobs over the past five years, fueling economic activity in cities like Baltimore. That's why Commerce loves hearing from local businesses on what makes them successful.

Whether it's our stellar workforce, prime location, or our unmatched quality of life, join us on social media with the hashtag #SuccessInMaryland and tell us your success story. I look forward to hearing from you and seeing Baltimore and Maryland continue to climb the charts!
